Domestic Animals

Cows
Bos taurus

Cattle have been domesticated since the late Stone Age (Neolithic). There are over a thousand breeds of cattle, though their wild ancestor has been exctint since the 17th century.
-
Cows are gregarious and often have a sweet nature; their veneration within Hindi faith seems well deserved.
-
A cow stomach has four compartments, helping them to both break down cellulose and obtain nutrients including protein from bacteria.

Belted Galloways
Bos taurus

Cows, now with a fancy stripe.

Belted Galloways are a little, stout, and fluffy Scottish breed.

Hereford Bull
Bos taurus

A gentle bull, grazing in the sun.

Sheep
Ovis aries

Sheep and goats are thought to be one of the oldest domesticated animals, after dogs.
-
Similar to cattle, sheep are both gregarious and ruminants (having four compartments to their stomach, assisting in the breakdown of cellulose).
-
I find sheep to be charming creatures, and enjoy seeing them dotted about the British countryside.

Sheep Field
Ovis aries

A very English scene (note the castle on the right).

November Horse
Equus caballus

A handsome horse, in an English field, in November.

Jack in Paradise
Felis catus

Jack the cat.
-
Jack greatly enjoyed exploring the outdoors with human company. His other hobby was spraying my dad's Volvo with urine.
-
Outdoor cats are a controversial subject, and my current cats only go outside with supervision. I was raised with cats as indoor-outdoor animals, where it was seen as cruel to keep them inside, and their hunting of vermin was held in high regard. Attitudes have since changed somewhat, out of concern for native wildlife and cat safety. But knowing what the outdoors meant to this cat, and how much he meant to me, I could never have taken it away from him. He was truly my friend.

Sagan
Felis catus
It is assumed that domestic cats originated from a mutually beneficial relationship between African Wildcats & neolithic farmers, with this taming eventually leading to their domestication. All of this has eventually led to allowing us all to bask in the glory of this cats fluffy belly (whose name is indeed derived from astronomer, Carl Sagan).
